Kirby oversees the management division of HVS and its Newport, RI based asset management division. Additionally, the team undertakes consulting assignments including brand and management searches, hotel performance analysis to improve profitability, revenue maximization, expert witness and development consulting.
The divisions were formed by the merger of Minneapolis-based American Hospitality Management Company, which Kirby founded in 1988, into HVS in 2004.
Kirby, the 2002 Chair of the AH&LA, grew up in the hotel industry from age four when his father was the second general manager of the first InterContinental Hotel which was in Belem, Brazil. After serving as an Armor officer in Vietnam, he completed his BS in Hotel & Restaurant Management at FSU.
After getting his degree, Kirby interned with InterContinental in Curaçao and later worked for L&H before accepting a regional position with Hilton’s franchise division. Subsequent industry roles included Resident Manager and General Manager positions in Hilton branded hotels, Director of Operations for a Mexican hotel company and for which he developed numerous hotels, SVP of a national management company, and opening a PKF office in Minneapolis before forming his own management firm.
